FAQ
About AFOL.lu
AFOL.lu is an online community and a local network for adult LEGO® fans in Luxembourg and the Greater Region. AFOL stands for „Adult Fan of LEGO®“ – grown-up fans of LEGO® bricks.
We are three worlds in one community: AFOL.lu a.s.b.l. as the legal entity, the open online platform with forum, gallery, and marketplace, and a partner network across the Greater Region. Our members come from Luxembourg, Germany, France, and Belgium.
AFOL.lu a.s.b.l. is the local association (Association sans but lucratif – non-profit association) based in Mertert. It also organises monthly meet-ups (regulars' table, building evening).
The AFOL.lu Community is the online platform with forum, gallery, blog, lexicon, ... where we exchange ideas beyond local meet-ups. Through the forum, we are also networked with other AFOLs and LUGs in the region – which makes it possible to bring together participants for projects locally, regionally, and beyond.
An a.s.b.l. (Association sans but lucratif) is a Luxembourg legal form for non-profit associations, comparable to e.V. in Germany. It is non-profit oriented – it pursues no profit-making intention but serves the common interest of its members.
AFOL.lu a.s.b.l. is registered with the Registre de Commerce et des Sociétés (RCS) Luxembourg under number F14202.
AFOL.lu is led by a seven-member board (Comité de gérance). Board members are elected at the annual general assembly by the active members. Mandates last two years and are staggered – the President and Secretary are not re-elected in the same year, which ensures continuity.
The current composition of the board can be found on our Board page.
Membership
There are three tiers of membership, ranging from very low-barrier to fully voting-eligible:
- Forum member (free, immediate): Simple registration on the website is enough. You can immediately participate in the forum, the gallery, and most online activities.
- Sympathisant (15 € per year, immediate): Via the online membership form, with subsequent payment. You financially support the association and gain access to all club offerings such as building evenings and group orders.
- Active member (50 € per year): Requires at least 6 months as a Sympathisant. Admission is decided once a year in Q1 by board decision. Active members have voting rights at the general assembly and actively shape the association.
Details on contributions and benefits can be found on the Membership Fees page.
In principle, anyone can become a member of the association. However, AFOL.lu is mainly aimed at adults, and children are only allowed when accompanied by an adult.
The regulars' table takes place from 19:30 to 22:00, building evenings from 19:00 to 22:00. Teenagers who enjoy teamwork and are independent are also welcome.
The 6-month waiting period is set out in the statutes. It serves two purposes: First, it ensures that active members know the community and share the values of AFOL.lu a.s.b.l. before they receive voting rights. Second, it protects the association from short-term takeover attempts that can occur in association-law crises.
There is no waiting period for forum or Sympathisant membership – these are open at any time.
Honorary members are appointed on the proposal of the board. This distinction is reserved for individuals who have rendered outstanding service to the LEGO® community in Luxembourg and the Greater Region. Honorary membership cannot be applied for.
Membership ends through written notice to the board (by letter or email to info@afol.lu), through death or dissolution of the person, through non-payment of the membership fee, or in rare cases through exclusion by the board in cases of particularly serious behaviour harmful to the association.
Events and activities
AFOL.lu is very active with various event formats:
- Monthly regulars' table in Wasserbillig (at Bistro Aquarium) – our central local format.
- Building evenings in Mertert – focused collaborative building.
- Lëtzbrick (annually, in April) – our major annual exhibition in Wasserbillig.
- Kloster Machern (annually) – exhibition and fair in Rhineland-Palatinate.
- LLTC, GBC, Luxembrick – thematic subgroups with their own activities.
Current dates can be found in the calendar on the website.
Lëtzbrick is our annual main exhibition – not to be confused with the monthly regulars' table. The event usually takes place in spring and is open to visitors and exhibitors from the entire Greater Region.
Exhibitors can apply in advance via the corresponding form. A dedicated forum board for Lëtzbrick coordinates exhibitors and answers practical questions.
MOC stands for „My Own Creation“ – a custom LEGO® creation that does not come from an official LEGO® set. MOCs are at the heart of the AFOL world: own models, own designs, often built with great effort and creativity.
You can show your MOCs in our gallery, discuss them in the forum, or present them at exhibitions. Building help and tips are always available in the forum.
